Not a Farm Stay...
As a guest at Glasbern, please feel free to explore our pastures, gardens, and greenhouses. Fashioned from a family farm, the inn retains its 19th century character, and offers warm hospitality with luxury accommodations. When you visit Glasbern you will witness sustainable agriculture in action.
The best of the past and the present meet at Glasbern Country Inn. Glasbern’s perennial gardens flourish under the care of horticulturist Pam Ruch. On the 100 acres of farm fields that surround the guest accommodations, we raise our own healthful vegetables, as well as sheep, cattle, pigs, ducks, turkeys, broilers, and laying chickens. Herb gardens, greenhouses, and numerous cultivated beds provide flowers, flavorings, and fresh-picked greens, also for use in our restaurant. Everything we do on the farm, from using sustainable grazing practices, to organically growing and gardening, to raising heritage animal breeds, is a testament to our dedication to serving nutritious/natural food while exhibiting a sound land management ethic.
Vegetable Gardens
Our greenhouses and vegetable beds provide the inn with fresh seasonal crops and herbs all year long. We grow an assortment of heirloom and open-pollinated crops.
Pasture Raised Beef, Pork, and Lamb
On the Farm, we use a rotational grazing method, daily moving livestock to new pastures to allow grass crops to re-grow. This technique not only produces exceptional grass-fed meats and dairy products, but maintains fertility and soil structure. Life cycles of plant and livestock pests are interrupted, so that our animals enjoy excellent health...We rely on our fertile pastures to supply the Scottish Highland beef cattle, Devon Milking cows, Katahdin sheep, and ‘Large Black’ hogs with antioxidant-rich grasses.
In the small-paddock rotation system utilized by the farm, cows and sheep graze fenced sections of the farm each day. Their manure naturally fertilizes the grasses and forbs, producing strong root systems that help to minimize erosion. This keeps both pasture plants and animals strong and lively.
Join us in our restaurant, and you will find that the lean, nutritious meats that we raise and serve are noticeably superior in taste and texture. Furthermore, studies have shown that naturally-raised, grass-fed meats and dairy products have unique health benefits.
Glasbern, a member of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) aims to contribute to the farming tradition of the region through the ongoing management and cultivation of our land. Guests at Glasbern might also enjoy visiting the nearby Rodale Institute, an internationally-recognized non-profit organization devoted to researching global solutions using organic farming techniques.
